The days were numbered for my ironing board cover. You know, it was faded, slightly torn, didn’t fit as well as it used to. Kind of like my favorite old concert tee shirt, but without all the fond memories.
The bones of the ironing board were still good, so I just wanted to re-cover it in like the easiest, cheapest way possible. And like, I did not want to pull out my sewing machine because we were getting ready to move.
I did some research and found this diy ironing board cover tutorial from 2 Little Super Heroes that seemed easy to follow with the ability to change out the step of machine sewing step to that of handsewing.

Supplies
Embroidery thread (or heavy duty thread)
Fabric of choice
Sewing pins
Scissors
I followed the directions from the 2 Little Super Heroes tutorial but with 2 changes:
- I re-covered right over the old cover
- I used the handsewn method to attach the string to the fabric
Other than that, I followed these steps.
- I laid fabric face down
- placed board on top of fabric, face up
- Cut fabric around ironing board at about 4″ all around
- Laid out the string
- Use the darning needle and embroidery thread to hand stitch the string using a zig-zag type stitch.
- Pull string taught and tied it off so that new ironing board cover wrapped tightly around the ironing board.
The whole process took about 1-2 hours.
Pretty easy without all the fuss of pulling my sewing machine out.
Tip: Trim excess fabric and apply a no-fray product to the ends of the fabric.
This project was done on a table top ironing board, but the handsewn method could be used for a standard sized ironing board.
And here is the after, sitting pretty in the (yet to be revealed) townhouse laundry area. Which did actually get finished before we moved.
Oh happy day ~ Amy
