When we purchased our 2 bedroom fixer upper last year, one of our goals was to update the “hobby shed” located behind the garage. Of course I was hoping that would have happened immediately after we moved in…
Let’s just say I’m quite the dreamer.
In reality, before any kind of serious update could begin, we needed to re-route the precariously placed electrical wires that were hanging from the roof of our house to the garage.
So late fall of last year, Ken took off work and dug a trench from the side of our house to the garage. Frank, our electrician friend, came over to actually run the electrical safely and correctly from house to garage and then garage to shed.
What do you think of that trench, by the way? Frank told Ken it was a masterpiece and wanted to hire him;)
Yes, this shed came with a full wall graffiti mural.
Meanwhile inside the shed the junk was piling up. I knew that if we were ever going to get serious about turning this shed into a usable work shop, I was going to need to de-hoard in a big way.
Two and a half truck loads to the Salvation Army later, I’m proud to say the shed is mostly cleared and ready for a makeover. And let me just say that hauling off all that junk was a little euphoric. What is it about decluttering that does that?
I picked up that table at a yard sale for $5. I had the shed cleared and this table set up for food service for our bon fire and apple bar, which you can see, here.
In this last year I’ve spent a lot of time imagining how I would like to fix up this shed. I’ve stood and stared at the space a lot because that how my mind works best.
I also created a She Shed Inspiration pin board to get the ideas flowing. If you are looking for more inspiration, head on over and check it out and follow along.
I’ve yet to decide whether to paint over the graffiti wall or take the boards down and either sell them, or give them away.
I’m leaning toward taking them down because although it’s not my style, I still respect the artistry and I think someone could use the boards to make unique furniture or repurpose them in some other way.
Aside from that here are some of the features I’m dreaming about for the shed.

Outside
A big change will be cutting out a larger opening and installing French doors. The old porch will be removed and eventually a new porch will be installed with a see-through covered top. The shed will also get a new coat of paint and I’m hoping Ken will build me a hidden garbage can center.

Inside
As much as I love shiplap, vertical planking just seems more the style I’m aiming for. I’d also like some type of planked ceiling, some high shelving, new paint on everything and updated lighting.

Storage and extras
I want to try to use my vertical space as much as possible. I like the idea of a rolling storage tower. I’ll also want a work table, a small seating area, a coffee station (necessity), a heating and air conditioning element.
As you can see this shed is going to need a lot of work, but I feel like I’ve got a good start at the planning phase. It’s funny, after viewing so many she shed makeovers around the web, I’ve realized that there is an element of tatter and wamble to most of them. Could that be the true essence of a she-shed?
My main goal is to make this shed cozy, classic and efficient. Let the floor boards creak as the will!
My budget won’t allow for anything more, so there will be a lot of conceding to use what I have wherever possible.
Lastly, I’m hoping this can become a multi-purpose room. Doubling as a party room and even a guest cottage when we have people visit. Since we now have electricity, and therefore heating and cooling capabilities, I may see that dream come actually come true. Have a great weekend ~ Amy

Your shed will no doubt be awesome, and as for the graffiti boards, take them down and frame each piece with old barn wood for eclectic graffiti art. Someone would love that.
