Cooking over a campfire

Weenie Roast a Fall Tradition

Looking for something to do outdoors this fall? Host a weenie roast  at the woods, at the park or in your own back yard.

When I was growing up it was a Columbus Day tradition for my mom and the neighbor ladies to pack up a lunch of hot dogs, potato salad and marshmallows, load all the kids in the car and head off to the nearest forest preserve.

It was great fun for everyone. The kids got to run around burning off energy and the moms got a chance to enjoy the beautiful fall color.

We would have scavenger hunts and play hide-n-seek, then roast weenies and marshmallows over a fire. This is, no doubt, one of my favorite childhood memories.

Keep it simple and bring just the basics. Plan to be home in time for dinner.
