Herbs in a Vintage Blue Ball Jar (Kitchen Update 4)

I so loved the fern in a jar project from the 3 Fun and Easy Summer Projects at Cottage in the Oaks, that, I decided to try replanting some of the herbs from our garden into glass jars. Every summer we plants herbs in pots for the outside. The down side is that we don’t get to enjoy them throughout the winter months. I’ve never considered growing herbs inside before because we haven’t had an ideal spot with enough light to keep them inside. As I am working on a kitchen update, I have plans to change that. In the meantime, using the Ball Vintage Blue Jars I made some herbs in a jar to keep and several to give as a gift along with the paint stick magnet set.

add rocks to the bottom

I added rocks in the bottom of my jars to help drainage. I just so happened to have collected some the other day on our day trip to dunes.

I mixed 1 part each of moisture retaining soil and regular potting soil.

I filled the jars with soil about 7/8ths of the way; dug a hole and planted the herb; and then added more soil to the root line.

I have been feeding them about a table spoon of water a day thus far, and they seem to be holding up quite well. As my herbs have gotten a bit overgrown,  I will trim them back and wait for new growth.

I’m thinking that I’ll wrap the gift jars up using the pretty Ball brand box they came in. A “don’t fix it if it’s not broken” kind of thing.

I am really digging my herbs in the vintage blue jars (pun…yeah, sorry!)  They were super easy to make, pretty enough for any window sill and will come in quite handy this winter when it’s time to cook.

Full disclosure: One of the plants pictured is NOT an herb, but an easy growing ground cover that I thought would look pretty in a jar, so I included it.

Fresh herbs make the house smell clean in my opinion better than any fake fragrance

[…] The majority of the beach is layered with soft sand but shells, rocks and other shore side finds are fairly easy to come by.  This is part of our collection for the day, which I just so happened to use in the bottom of my herbs in a jar project. […]
